What a great week to take vacation and go to Brown County to work on trails. Most of the camp was full by Wednesday evening and there were only a couple of empty sites that I saw by Friday morning. There were quite a few out in the primitive area for the weekend as well.
Most of the chainsaw crew left on Monday before Thanksgiving to go down and get started clearing trees from the trails. Hillary and I went down Monday morning with Rheba Montgomery, Chris and Stacy Lowe, Bob Montgomery and Norma Heistand, Bob McPheeters and Debbie Fisher, and Rob Brunnemer. We had plenty of trees to get off the trails. We started Monday and everybody worked every day but Thursday when we had our turkey day. Later in the week the rest of the guys showed up and we were able to get three hazardous trees off the trails with the ropes to be sure they went where we needed them to.
There was plenty of trash for everybody to pick up especially on all the trails heading to and from Story. I believe this has been the trashiest we have seen these trails in quite a few years.
The road crew was out in force and completed in record time with all the help they had and it looked so nice Sunday when we were leaving. Great job road crew.
The trail crew that was working on trail 7 did some reroutes. More info on this in another article from Yvette Rollins.
There was quite a bit of discussion on the shape of the trails and the mud. This fall has been very hard on the trails and campground with all the rain that just didn’t let up. We’re going to wait until spring to see what happens over the winter before making a plan to work on some of the trails and especially the creek crossing on trail F going to the store. Please use discretion and some common sense riding this trail until it is worked on.
We had the shelter house all wrapped in plastic with the new lights that Dave Maczymsak got for us and fireplaces going so it was toasty warm in there for the carry in dinner. We had a standing room only crowd and plenty of great food.
Sunday morning Doug Baird, the property manager, came by and talked to us. He said he was expecting the southern maintenance crew in soon. They’re going to try to work on the roads and drainage in the camp this winter. Doug said he was wanting to also work on the hitch rails and pads this winter so hopefully the weather will hold and they can get the camp back into the shape it needs to be in if it is to continue to be the premier camp in Indiana because Walt Zak and Jana Gold, at Deam, and Bob Sawtelle at O’Bannon are working hard to make Indiana have 3 great premier campgrounds and trail networks.
Great job on the workday!!!
